Ask The Painter: When is the Best Time to Paint?
June 23, 2010With a few exceptions, the answer is “Anytime!”
One of the questions we are frequently asked is this: When is the best time of year to paint? With a very few exceptions, the answer is “Anytime!”. Each time of year has different factors to consider, and professional painters who are well-versed in the specifications of the products that they use will know when the conditions are right to complete your project. But here in Texas, almost any job can be done at any time of year.
In the winter, temperatures are cooler and this causes paint to dry slower. Some work (e.g. painting elastomeric “stucco paint”) may need to be delayed or planned for days when the temperatures are at least 60 degrees.
Warmer temperatures in the summer generally speed paint drying time. We are sometimes asked if it gets *too* hot to paint exteriors, and most of the time the answer is “no”. As the sun makes its way across the sky, there is some part of a home that is in the shade at any given time. The trick, then, is to plan the work to stay out of the sun. The painters will do this anyway for reasons of personal comfort!
So the best time to get a painting project done really is whenever you are ready to get it done. Exteriors are more time-sensitive than interiors in as much as the weather breaks paint down, and unprotected surfaces are prone to drying out, cracking, and/or rotting.
